Going Overboard! How not to spend your money!

The drone industry is continually littered with shiny new toys, all of which continually encourage you to spend your money and add to your fleet of aircraft and cameras. But the question is do you need 4,5,6 or 7 aircraft? The answer that comes into your head is probably ‘I’d like more aircraft’ but do you need them?

Here are some questions to ask before you buy!

1.What will it add to my business?

When I say 'add' to what I mean is will it offer another possible revenue stream that you can realise? Ask yourself this question and be honest with yourself!

2.Do I have the skills necessary to provide this revenue stream?

Some skills such as Thermography, Mapping, Surveying and Photogrammetry are real skills that need training before you undertake the service you are considering (if you don’t intend to make yourself look like an idiot!)

3.Is this aircraft good enough for the job, or conversely is it overkill?

If you are considering spending a large amount of money on an aircraft you need to make sure that it up to the job, or indeed like trying to catch a mouse with a bazooka! Either way, you may buy an aircraft that just isn’t up to the task or waste a stupid amount of money on an aircraft you will never use!

These questions will give you a good idea of whether your enthusiasm is leading your wallet or your brain! Whilst all of the above is true, there is always the necessity of redundancy. I never go to a job with less than 3 aircraft. Primarily because if one of them decides not to fly one the others invariably do.
